How to choose a camping tent in Australia

Start with your sleeping layout and the way you reach camp. A good shortlist balances usable floor space, a pitching routine you can manage, the whole packed load and the conditions you expect.

Measure the beds, not just the floor area

Write down each mattress or stretcher’s length and width. Check the inner room, roof slope and doorway clearance. A family shelter’s living area is not extra sleeping capacity unless a suitable sleeping enclosure is supplied or added.

Compare the complete pitching routine

Pole tents need frame assembly; air tents need the right pump, adapter and inflation pressure; quick frames need extending and locking. All still need pegging and tensioning. Practise the complete pitch before your first trip.

Plan the whole load

Compare the complete packed tent, poles, pegs and any pump or extra inner. A low shelter-only weight can omit useful components. Measure your storage space against the bag’s longest dimension, especially for quick-frame and large air tents.

Match the model to the forecast

Ventilation, drainage, seam condition, anchoring and site selection all matter. A waterproof fabric number or air-beam frame is not a promise of storm or alpine suitability. Check the model manual and current conditions before choosing a site.

Tent selection questions

What size tent should I buy for a family of four?

Start with four sleeping places, then check the exact inner dimensions against your mattresses. Four people on compact mats need a different layout from four people using wide stretchers. If you want a separate living room, compare tents with that space built in rather than counting it as a bedroom.

Are air tents easier than pole tents?

They replace the main pole-frame step with inflation. That can suit some campers, but the complete job still includes anchoring, guylines, checking pressure and packing away. Large air tents can also be heavy. Compare the actual routine and packed load of the model you are considering.

Does every shelter include an inner tent?

Some models include a sleeping inner, while others are shelters with a separately sold sleeping enclosure. The comparison lists inclusions and relevant accessories. Turn on the sleeping-add-on filter to explore those shelters.
